Importance of Workplace Experience for Youth

Construction Workers

The Job1 partnership was formed to address the importance of workplace experience for youth. Working and volunteering can be a valuable, eye-opening and enjoyable experience for both youth and employers, and we encourage all youth to get as much workplace experience as possible during their school years. For your convenience we have compiled a number of resources for you to use in planning the workplace experience for your career path.

Perhaps the most obvious way to gain workplace experience is through a job. Staff at the local American Job Centers (Workforce Central Career Center and North Central Career Centers)can assist you in your job search, resume writing, training and other job readiness skills. Contact them to attend a Youth Career Center Orientation.

Your school may offer assistance in finding paid or unpaid internships (workplace experience for school credit). Contact your school guidance counselor for more information on school-offered internships.

Volunteering is another valuable way to get a youth hands-on experience or to try out a job or an industry that you think you might like.

There are lots of opportunities out there, and lots of organizations that are always looking for enthusiastic people willing to donate their time and effort. All you have to do is start looking.

Please feel free to browse the Job1 Partner Organizations on this site to see if you may be interested and eligible for the programs they offer. Most have certain eligibility requirements; contact them to find out if you qualify.
